Fantasy Books to Read: My Fantasy Reading Journey So Far

Although fantasy isn’t my usual go-to genre, one of my 2024 goals was to widen my reading horizons. I decided it was time to step outside my comfort zone and give fantasy a proper try—and I’m so glad I did! Along the way, I’ve discovered just how many sub-genres fall under this broad and exciting category, but for now, I’m focusing on simply enjoying the stories without getting bogged down by definitions.

So far, I’ve read three fantasy books this year, and while I’m still new to the genre, these stories have been full of magic, adventure, and characters I won’t soon forget. I’ll continue adding to this post as I read more, but for now, here are the fantasy books I’ve explored—and loved—so far.

In this thrilling conclusion to the Leopard’s Bane series, star-crossed lovers Yalka and Peglar face impossible trials. Yalka, imprisoned and betrayed, must fight for her freedom while Peglar’s life hangs in the balance. With treachery, sacrifice, and love at the heart of the story, readers are taken on a gripping journey as these characters fight for their destinies.

My Thoughts

While A Hanging Moon is the third book in the series, it reads well as a standalone. I loved how the plot was filled with suspense and unexpected twists that kept me turning the pages. Phill Featherstone weaves themes of loyalty, resilience, and the human spirit against a corrupt society, creating a powerful and emotional narrative. If you enjoy well-crafted fantasy with high stakes and engaging characters, this one is worth checking out.

What begins as a rescue mission turns into a gripping quest for justice and the truth about humanity’s past.

My Thoughts

This book caught me by surprise! At first, the alternating timelines were a bit confusing, but once I settled into the rhythm, I found myself completely absorbed in Rella’s story. Ben Cotterill combines high-stakes action with deep-rooted conspiracies, painting a vivid picture of a society where survival is never guaranteed. Rella is a fierce protagonist, full of grit and determination, and the pacing keeps the tension high throughout. If you enjoy science fiction and fantasy adventures, Blades of Destiny is a thought-provoking,

entertaining read.

About the Book

Desma, returning victorious from the cursed city of Urruc, brings home riches, glory, and the sacred Belt of Turan. But when tragedy strikes and she commits an unforgivable act to save her father’s soul, Desma is branded unclean and banished from her kingdom. Now, her path to redemption is paved with harsh truths about love, power, and the gods themselves.

My Thoughts

I loved how Damien Colucci brought this intricate world to life. Though there were many characters, the main players shone through beautifully, particularly Desma, whose flaws and strengths made her a compelling heroine. While some early scenes felt a little slow, the pacing soon picked up, and I couldn’t put the book down. Colucci’s vivid descriptions transported me straight into this epic tale. If you love strong characters and complex, action-packed fantasy, this is the perfect place to start.
