About Book: Can a love forged in peril break the chains of fate?
In the intricate dance of fate, Mina, a diligent high school senior, is abruptly torn from her ordinary life by an underground criminal organization, thrusting her into an unfamiliar and challenging world. Oliver, a man who has recently emerged from the shadows of abandonment, grapples with the harsh reality of Mina's abduction. The unexpected loss of their intense love jeopardizes Oliver's newfound hope for a better life, even as their extraordinary connection ignites amid peril and enigma.
Can Oliver and Mina rewrite destiny's script? Is the radiant beacon of their blossoming connection bright enough to guide them through a world steeped in uncertainty? Or will they forever wander as seekers of the elusive symphony of joy?
My Thoughts: Love and Other Cages by Emilia Ares is a thrilling read with a bonus layer of young romance woven into the plot. Although there’s no mention of a series, it feels like the previous book should be marketed as such, but this one can be read as a stand alone.
The two main characters are complex and flawed, yet their connection feels strong and real, thanks to Ares’ writing. The story covers themes of family, loyalty, love, hope, and fear, but it’s also about longing—longing for love, acceptance, obedience, and endurance.
The book opens with a major event that sets the tone for the story, drawing you right into Mina and Oliver’s journey. It’s told from both their perspectives, with alternate chapters, which kept me engaged (if occasionally a little frustrated by what’s left unsaid). But that’s true to life, too!
The pacing is steady and well-balanced, giving just enough in each chapter to keep you hooked for the next. I’ll admit, as someone who isn’t a big romance fan, some of those scenes felt a bit drawn out for me, but that’s just personal preference. They did make the characters feel more human and gave them hope in the difficult world they live in.
As the story progressed, the tension and stakes kept rising. Mina’s harsh reality and Oliver’s desperate search for her revealed the emotional depth of their connection. Their uncertain futures kept me turning the pages—proof of Ares’ skilful writing.
For me, the book got better as I went along, with plenty of twists that held my interest. And then it ended...on a cliff hanger! Now I’m really hoping for another.
In conclusion, this book touches on so many themes, which kept me engaged from start to finish as the tension built. If you’re looking for a book with everything—romance, suspense, and emotional depth—I highly recommend Love and Other Cages.
Q is for Quarry by Sue Grafton – Another gripping entry in Grafton’s iconic Kinsey Millhone series. A cold case comes to life with twists, turns, and Kinsey’s trademark determination.
Title: Q is for Quarry
Author: Sue Grafton
Genre: Mystery, Murder. Crime
Series: Kinsey Milhone Series book 17 of 25
Publisher: Pan
Date Published: 2012
Book Length: 570
Format: Paperback I purchased myself
Star Rating: 4**** I liked it and recommend
About Book: Q is for Quarry is the seventeenth in the Kinsey Millhone mystery series by Sue Grafton and is based on a true crime. She was a 'Jane Doe', an unidentified white female whose decomposed body was discovered near a quarry off California's Highway 1. The case fell to the Santa Teresa County Sheriff's Department, but the detectives had little to go on, and after months of investigation, the murder remained unsolved. That was eighteen years ago. Now the two men who found the body, both nearing the end of long careers in law enforcement, want one last shot at the case . . . and they turn to Kinsey Millhone to help them find closure. But revisiting the past can be a dangerous business, and what begins with the pursuit of Jane Doe's real identity ends in a high-risk hunt for her killer. Based on an unsolved homicide that occurred in 1969, Q is for Quarry and Grafton's interest in the case have renewed police efforts. The body has been exhumed, and a facial reconstruction made that appears in the last pages of the novel. It is hoped that the photograph will trigger memories that may lead to a positive identification.
My Thoughts: Q is for Quarry by Sue Grafton is a murder mystery thriller and the second book I’ve read in the Kinsey Millhone series. What’s great about these books is that they can be enjoyed as standalones, so you don’t feel lost if you haven’t been reading them in order (like me). That said, I do wonder if reading the series in order might give a bit more insight into Kinsey’s backstory. It didn’t take away from the main plot, though, so it wasn’t a big deal.
Sue Grafton’s writing is something special. I honestly think you could pick up one of her books, read a random page, and still know it’s hers. Her style is so smooth and almost melodic, with a rhythm that’s a pleasure to read. I’ve always thought her mysteries have a bit of an Agatha Christie vibe, too. The way the story unfolds—one clue at a time—keeps you hooked without feeling rushed.
In Q is for Quarry, the mystery builds slowly but surely, keeping me guessing all the way through. I enjoyed piecing together the clues alongside Kinsey, and while the pacing isn’t action-packed, it’s just right for the kind of thoughtful, detail-driven story Grafton excels at.
Overall, I’d give this one a solid four stars. It’s a well-crafted, engaging mystery with a strong sense of place and character. I might just have to go back and start the series from the beginning to get to know Kinsey even better—but for now, I’m happy dipping in and out of these books as the mood strikes. If you’re into clever mysteries with a classic feel, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try.

Hardened by neglect and violence, Ty's world is turned upside down when he and his friend Asha discover an abandoned baby beside its dead young mother in an alleyway. This unexpected responsibility ignites a new purpose within him. However, their journey through the gritty streets of London and the struggle to protect the baby lands Ty in jail, which is a harsh reality for a boy already burdened by life's cruelties. From encouraging the youth to return to school, running errands for the elderly, wiping out racism and knife crime, to standing up against the oppressive forces that haunt their streets, the Hay Patrollers are a beacon of hope in a dark world. This gripping story follows Ty's transformation from a victim of circumstance to a leader of change. His journey is one of resilience, bravery, and the unyielding belief that even the most unlikely heroes can make a difference.
My Thoughts: Ty by Brian Montgomery is a stark and realistic portrayal of two teenagers struggling to survive life on the streets. While I’ve summarised it simply here, the story is so much more. What stands out is the unexpected depth of compassion shared between the two protagonists. Despite the hardships and trauma, they endure, their empathy for each other fuels their desire for a better life.
Montgomery crafts a compelling narrative that drew me in completely. His writing is atmospheric, skilfully building tension and immersed me in the protagonists’ world. As I read, I found myself feeling a surprising sense of hope for them, even amidst the heartbreak and challenges they face. The emotional journey the book takes you on is powerful, stirring a mix of emotions—hope, sorrow, and admiration.
In conclusion, Ty by Brian Montgomery is a moving story about hope, resilience, and the belief that we can rise above adversity. It’s a beautifully written, unforgettable read that shouldn’t be missed.

When 'Jurassic' Jemma Thorne and her dog, Dino, find an incredible fossil on a Dorset beach, she doesn't realise that it will lead to a trail of greed, jealousy and murder. As the guilt of her past comes back to haunt her, Jemma must fight to protect her family, her friends, her town and herself. Can she overcome her demons and escape from the danger surrounding her?
My Thoughts: A Dangerous Fossil by John J. Delaney is a gripping mystery thriller set along the stunning Jurassic Coast and the first in The Jurassic Jemma Mysteries series. As someone who loves the Jurassic coastline, my expectations were high—and they were exceeded.
The pacing starts steady as the richly drawn characters and fascinating fossil lore unfold, pulling me in. The mystery weaves through the narrative like a triffid, slowly closing in on its prey. One standout moment is the witty quote: “Seagulls waddled around like slightly obese men in grey suits with their hands clasped behind their backs.” I’ll never look at seagulls the same way again!
Jemma, the protagonist, is layered and relatable, her backstory revealed in intriguing fragments that hint at more to come in the series. The vivid descriptions of the Dorset coastline transported me directly into the story, making me feel part of the unravelling mystery. Twists, turns, and sharp insights into themes of greed and jealousy kept me glued to the pages.
In conclusion, A Dangerous Fossil is more than a mystery—it’s a story of greed and jealousy. With unforgettable characters, vivid settings, and a thrilling plot, this book is a must-read. Be prepared to stay up all night—I couldn’t put it down!

About Book: An English lady proposes marriage to a brooding Scotsman—but she’s about to learn there’s nothing convenient about courting this fiery Highlander. An English lady with everything to lose…
Beth Croft is all poise and propriety—or so she tells herself. To save her father from financial ruin, she proposes a marriage of convenience to Boyd Sandeman, the ruggedly handsome, infuriating Scotsman and wine tycoon. She expects some challenges, but she didn’t expect Boyd himself—a man with a dry wit, a commanding presence, and a knack for turning her world upside down.
A Scotsman with a taste for revenge…
For Boyd, Beth’s offer is a chance to settle an old score with her father, who once humiliated him. He agrees, but only if Beth can prove she’s up to the task. At a festive Christmas house party, Boyd devises three challenges to test her mettle, from blind wine tastings to keeping up with his demanding (and often maddening) expectations. Yet as they spar and spark, Boyd’s own defenses begin to falter in surprising ways.
Three trials, one Christmas, and undeniable chemistry…
Beth didn’t expect proving herself would mean more late nights than she’d bargained for—or that her heart would be on the line. Can she survive Boyd’s trials, break through his defences, and make it to Christmas morning with her pride—and her heart—intact?
My Thoughts: I have just finished Three Days to be Ruined by Giovanna Siniscalchi, the fifth book in the Winemakers series, and I have to say—it was an absolute delight. This wasn’t my first time reading one of Siniscalchi’s works, so I had pretty high expectations going in. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
The way Siniscalchi writes is pure velvet. Her prose flows so beautifully, and the layers of hidden meanings and the constant undercurrent of tension kept me completely hooked. Every chapter begins with a thoughtful quote, and I loved how those added an extra touch of atmosphere, really grounding the story in its historical setting.
As I read, I found myself completely immersed in the world she created. The words felt like a rich, velvety wine, drawing me into every scene so deeply that I felt like I was actually there, quietly watching everything unfold. Siniscalchi has this incredible talent for writing historical fiction that doesn’t just tell a story but truly transports you back in time.
For me, Three Days to be Ruined is a perfect mix of romance, history, and absolutely gorgeous writing. It’s clear that Siniscalchi has mastered the art of crafting stories that feel both timeless and deeply personal. Whether you’re already a fan of the Winemakers series or picking up one of her books for the first time, this one is a must-read. I’m already looking forward to seeing what she writes next.
